LED Indicators
The Demeter device uses three LEDs to show its current state: Mode, Status, and Error. Use this guide to interpret what each light means.
SD card safety: Remove or insert the SD card only when the Status LED is
Purple (pulsing), Dark Blue, or Yellow.
If the Status LED is Orange or Green, the device is actively using the SD card and removal can corrupt it.
Hold the button for 3s (to pause the schedule or stop recording) to put the device into a safe state.

Mode LED
- Purple — Startup: shows for a few seconds while the device initialises internal systems.
- Dark Blue — Bird mode selected (normal operation after startup).
- Yellow — Bat mode selected (normal operation after startup).
- Off — Device idle, sleeping, or recording.
Status LED
- Green — Recording (Bird mode). Do not remove SD card.
- Orange — Recording (Bat mode). Do not remove SD card.
- Purple (pulsing) — Scheduler armed: waiting for the next recording window. Safe to remove SD card.
- Dark Blue — Recording off by user (Bird mode). (Transitions from Green → Dark Blue.) Safe to remove SD card.
- Yellow — Recording off by user (Bat mode). (Transitions from Orange → Yellow.) Safe to remove SD card.
- Off — Device idle, sleeping, or recording. Press button briefly to check state before removing SD card.
Error LED Codes
If the Error LED is lit, check the colour code below:
- Red (Solid) — SD Error (blocking; device cannot continue).
- Purple — Update Error (firmware update failed).
- Yellow — Config Error (invalid or missing configuration).
- Cyan — Time Error (RTC not set / invalid timestamp).
- Dark Blue — Schedule Error (invalid or missing schedule file).
- Orange (Flashing) — Low Battery (replace or recharge soon).
Tip: When you turn recording off manually, the Status LED will stay on (Dark Blue in Bird mode, Yellow in Bat mode) to confirm the mode is still selected even though recording has stopped.
